The Critical Engineering Manifesto.: Beyond the ‘awe of implementation’

The fourth tenet of the Critical Engineering manifesto reads as follows: “The Critical Engineer looks beyond the ‘awe of implementation’ to determine methods of influence and their specific effects.”

I cannot stress the importance of the statement above. I believe it is very important to recognize that technology influences its users in as much as we the users influence the technology. In other words, there is always an agenda. Now, the use and form of technology creates a peculiar dialogue between humans wherein the designer/engineer of the technology shares his goals/ideals with the user of the technology, and the user breathes life into these goals and ideals by using the technology.
