I find the mapping of First word to the left and last word to the right of the hype cycle to be an oversimplification of concepts that are quite separable.
The Hype Cycle pertains largely to emerging fields in technology. To techniques and formal means of problem solving.
The notion of First Word art and Last Word art is primarily applied to works of art that are evaluated not on their formal novelty but instead on their ability to instill awe in an audience. The work may contain clever uses of technology or novel applications of a new process, but at the end of the day the audience member will care more about how they feel than about technical esoteric means.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
I am a believer in the notion that the most compelling works are those where an audience of laypeople need not consider its technological complexity to appreciate the piece.
