This American Life episode discusses devilish musical cords emanating from our appliances

In considering the sounds of stress I was reminded of this This American Life episode

Episode 110: Mapping.  Act 2, Hearing by Jack Hitt.

Toby Lester started to map the sounds in his world, the everyday sounds that surround us all the time, that most of us do not even bother to notice, much less analyze. What he found is that between the hum of the heater, the whine of his computer and his phone’s dial tone, the add up to an augmented fourth.  Toby did some research and discovered that the “Catholic Church had assigned different meanings to numerous musical intervals back in the Middle Ages. And the augmented fourth was the most reviled sound of its time– feared as the “diabolus in musica,” the devil in the music.”
